Artist Statement
Alison Bixby’s color photographs present straightforward scenes including cityscapes, landscapes, waterscapes and international travel destinations. Most of her photographic images are unedited in terms of cropping. Only slight adjustments have been made, staying close to the images’ original color, shadows and saturation. Alison maintains her personal purpose of making art for its entertainment value. She creates images that can be thought-provoking without necessarily making critical statements about society.
Focusing on colorful, horizontal and diagonal compositions that often juxtapose one subject against another, the artist finds beauty in subjects such as beaches, bridges, city buildings, clouds, harbors, nature, statues, and trains. She searches for scenes against backdrops that are seemingly ordinary while highlighting angles, natural light or shadows in her compositions. Alison’s images tend to include variations of bright or primary colors found outdoors. She also captures ambient light, architecture lit by artificial lighting, evening silhouettes, and fireworks over water, stormy clouds or hazy, subdued light around the sunset hour.
The recent series, “Cityscapes, Landscapes and Travel Destinations,” consists mostly of digital inkjet prints in small to medium sizes, grouped together by subject matter and color themes. The past series titled, “Beaches and Water,“ and an earlier series, “Signs of Life in America,” include a majority of traditional photographs printed using medium format negatives with more recent works in the form of digital photographs created on cameras and iPhones.
Alison received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts, after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art-Photography from Haverford College. She started by printing, framing and exhibiting her own traditional photographic C-prints in Haverford, PA and in New York, NY. Her artistic career spans over three decades, including group and solo exhibitions plus local and national photography contest awards and photographs published in books, magazines and newspapers.
Alison’s photographs have been shown in group and solo art exhibitions, especially in Chicago and New York, plus across the United States and overseas, from 1988 to the present. She displays photos on her website, AlisonBixby.com, along with exhibition lists and artist statements. The artist grew up on the East Coast, then after college she worked and lived in the borough of Manhattan in New York City for a decade before moving in 1999 to Chicago, IL.
While working as a residential real estate broker, Alison continues to hold memberships in artisanal and photographic alliances to show her work together with other local artists. She lives in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, IL.
